ROME JOINS THE UNESCO CREATIVE CITIES NETWORK

Recognition as “Creative City of Film”

Today UNESCO has designated Rome Creative City of Film. The prestigious international recognition has been officially announced in Paris. The first thanks are dedicated to Director-General Mdme (Irina) Bokova and to the whole Network staff, that made this prestigious designation possible; to the Ambassador Mrs Lo Monaco, who represents Italy at UNESCO and to Professor Puglisi, President of UNESCO Italian Delegation. This goal has been achieved thanks to the combined commitment of Roma Capitale, Fondazione Cinema per Roma and Istituto Luce Cinecittà, with the support, first of all, of the National Government, of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of Lazio Region, of RAI, and of the entire community of Italian film industry, that, for almost a year, has held on tight to the project with collaboration and solidarity.

The designation is a prestigious recognition for the Eternal City, thus becoming a member of the important Network that counts, so far, 69 cities all around the world – among which there are Sidney, Beijing, Seoul, Montreal, Dakar, Buenos Aires, Prague, Berlin, Brazzaville – that stood out for the excellence achieved in Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gatronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music. Up until today, before the Capital, only three Italian cities were part of the UNESCO list: Bologna city of Music, Fabriano City of Crafts and Folk Art, and Turin City of Design.

UNESCO Creative Cities of Film are committed to promoting the best experiences they have achieved in the fields of cultural and film industry and making them available to the network; to making creativity a driving force of their economic development, nationally and internationally, thanks to the interaction between the private and public sectors. Key point of the cooperation among the creative cities is the access, the participation and the inclusion of communities and citizens, especially the less priviledged, in the cultural life.
